We’ve always known our kitchen had a bit of Zest to it… but now it’s official!

We’re absolutely bursting with pride to share that Our Lewis (yes, our Lewis – of Pit House kitchen fame!) has only gone and won a nationwide cookery competition. That’s right – Zest Quest Asia 2025, no less. A prestigious national event celebrating the best in Asian cuisine, with catering college students from across the UK battling it out for culinary glory.

Lewis teamed up with two of his fellow foodie comrades from Loughborough College, and together they cooked up a storm – quite literally. Their menu? A beautifully bold and intricate showcase of South Korean cuisine. Think spice, sizzle and skill, all presented with the kind of flair you’d expect from a chef with a bright future (and a clean apron).

Not only did they plate up perfection, they also wowed the judges with a detailed presentation that really showed their passion for the culture, the flavours, and the techniques behind the dishes. The result? First place!

As part of his prize, Lewis is now jetting off to Hong Kong for a once-in-a-lifetime culinary adventure. From rural West Leake to the bustling food mecca of Asia – talk about a journey of taste!

While we’ll miss his jokes (and his immaculate stock rotation skills) while he’s away, we couldn’t be prouder. Lewis brings so much creativity and care to The Star’s kitchen – whether he’s serving up hearty pub favourites or getting fancy with the specials. He’s a true team player and an absolute joy to have on board.

Here at The Star, we’ve always believed that a great pub is only as good as the people behind it – and we really do have the dream team. From the chefs stirring up seasonal dishes in the (known locally) Pit House Restaurant, to our friendly front-of-house crew greeting you with a smile (and maybe a real-ale pint), we’re one big family. It’s why so many of our regulars keep coming back – not just for the food, but for the warmth, the laughs, and the little moments that make a visit memorable.

Our food offering is as varied as our countryside weather. Whether you’re after a proper pub classic, something plant-based and modern, or a little culinary twist from our talented chefs (hello, specials board), we’ve got something to tickle every tastebud. Think slow-cooked meats, fresh seasonal veg, comforting puddings, and occasionally, something that might just surprise you – especially when Lewis is involved!

We know this is just the beginning for him – so if you’re dining with us soon, keep an eye out for the lad with the big smile and the even bigger dreams. He’s definitely one to watch.

Well done, Lewis – you’ve done your college, your team, and your West Leake family proud. We’ll be raising a pint (and maybe a gyoza or two) in your honour.
